In this guide, I will be running you through all you want to know about how to make your own coffee scrub answering questions like what is a coffee sugar scrub, how to use coffee scrub for cellulite, why you should make your own DIY coffee sugar scrub, how to use coffee as a body scrub and more.
So, lets make a coffee scrub homemade!
What Is A Homemade Coffee Scrub?
A homemade coffee sugar scrub is a mix of ingredients that are used to exfoliate the skin. The star ingredient in this scrub is coffee. It is combined with sugar and other ingredients, like oils, to form a thick scrub.
Coffee works to exfoliate your skin to remove the dead skin cells which can help to boost your circulation and plump your skin. Studies suggest that the caffeine in coffee scrubs could also help to reduce the appearance of cellulite and dimples. It is high in antioxidants with the potential ability to reduce inflammation and more.
Coffee is quite an abrasive ingredient to use on the skin and I do not recommend using this coffee scrub on face as the facial skin is too delicate for the level of abrasion. You can use your homemade coffee scrub for body areas like your legs, arms and feet.
Although dead skin cells will shed by themselves, using a coffee scrub at home will help to speed this up and may also prevent ingrown hairs and body acne forming.
I don’t see many coffee scrub disadvantages other than avoiding use of it on your face. If you have sensitive skin, however, you may want to skip this recipe as it can be too abrasive. I also recommend you only use white/brown sugar in your coffee coconut oil scrub.

Why Make A Coffee Body Scrub Recipe?
There are a heap of benefits to making your own coffee body scrub. Firstly, it will give your skin a great exfoliation while still leaving it soft, healthy and nourished. It could prevent ingrown hairs, body acne and more benefits of coffee body scrub that I go into below.

Ingredients For The Best Coffee Scrub DIY
One of the best things about this easy coffee scrub recipe is that you actually only need a few things to make it work that you may already have.
If you don’t, eBay and Amazon Australia are quick and easy places to buy ingredients and all the gear you need. Below, I direct you to the best place to buy each ingredient or you can click here to buy now on Amazon or here for eBay. This is how I buy all of these ingredients.
Ground Coffee

Ground coffee is the primary ingredient in this body scrub. The coffee grounds give this scrub a sand-like texture and provide a good amount of abrasion on the skin.
Coffee is full of caffeine and antioxidants which can help to reduce the look of dimples and cellulite on the body and help reduce inflammation. The caffeine in coffee may also improve blood flow and tighten the skin.
Those with sensitive skin may find the granules of coffee too rough for their skin and I do not recommend using a homemade coffee face scrub as the facial skin is too sensitive. You can find my face scrub recipe here.
Sugar

Sugar works together with the coffee in this recipe to provide the abrasion needed for exfoliation. Picking a sugar that works for your desired level of abrasion is a good move.
I personally use plain white sugar as I find the abrasive level perfect for exfoliating my skin and it works for all skin types.
If you have sensitive skin, however, you may like to think about using brown sugar as this will provide you with a smaller grain and softer texture.
If you are looking for a more abrasive coffee scrub, you could choose to use raw sugar.
Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of my favourite skin care ingredients. It is totally versatile with uses extending from cooking to hair care. It’s also an awesome ingredient in my coffee scrub recipe as it has plenty of benefits to offer your skin.
Coconut oil actually cleanses the skin along with softening and moisturising it. It contains lauric acid, which is an essential fatty acid that is fantastic for your skin. It holds anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities that help to keep your skin free from infection.
In this coffee scrub recipe, coconut oil is going to soften and hydrate the skin while the coffee and sugar are exfoliating your skin. The perfect match.
If you want a DIY coffee body scrub without coconut oil, you could switch the coconut oil for olive oil, sunflower oil or almond oil.

Essential Oil?

Although I haven’t added any essential oils to my coffee scrub recipe, feel free to add them to yours. Adding essential oils to your coffee scrub can increase the benefits of your scrub, particularly if you chose the right essential oils. Though, you could add any you like. I suggest adding essential oils like:
- Vanilla Essential Oil: Beautiful calming scent, sedative properties, mood boosting, antibacterial.
- Cinnamon Essential Oil: Spicy and sweet scent with many benefits to the body, aphrodisiac, relaxant, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.
- Nutmeg Essential Oil: Woody, spicy and sweet scent that is uplifting, stimulant and sedative, eases anxiety and stress and can lower blood pressure.
- Ginger Essential Oil: Earthy, spicy and warm scent that can help nausea, digestive upsets, migraines and more.
- Cardamom Essential Oil: Rich, woody, spicy and sweet scent that can calm and sooth, ease digestion and more.

How To Make Coffee Scrub
Are you ready to make your homemade coffee scrub? Here it is!
This recipe is simple because all you really need to do is place all your ingredients together and mix them. Voila! You’re done.

If you are looking to use your homemade coffee scrub for face, I recommend you look for a different recipe as the coffee grounds are too abrasive to make this a coffee facial scrub DIY.
If you would like to use this coffee scrub on your foot heels and rougher areas of the body, you could add raw sugar in your recipe for some extra exfoliation. Likewise, you can use brown sugar if you’d prefer a softer textured sugar to your coffee scrub.
Generally, though, plain white sugar works best.
I am an average build and the recipe I have provided is enough for me to have one exfoliation treatment. You could make more if you wish.

Homemade Coffee Scrub Recipe
This homemade coffee body scrub is designed for single use. It's crazy easy to make so there is no reason not to stir it up every time your skin needs rejuvenation. It leaves your skin feeling great.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon Ground Coffee
- 1 tablespoon Sugar
- 1 tablespoon Coconut Oil
Instructions
- If you have coffee beans, grind them first
- Melt the coconut oil in the microwave
- Mix all ingredients together in a bowl
- Allow it to harden for an hour or so to make a crumbly mixture. If it sets into a block, use a fork or end of a spoon to mash it up so it's a crumbly mixture you can apply
Notes
You can make more and store it in an airtight container if you wish.
How To Use Coffee Scrub
To use your coffee body scrub, this is what you do to see great results:
- Begin by getting your skin wet in warm water. I stand in my shower and wait until I am completely soaked. You can quickly have a soak in the bath if that is what you prefer. Doing this will help prep your skin by opening your pores and softening your skin.
- Turn off the water in your shower or stand up in your bath. Basically, get out of the water.
- Take the coffee scrub into your hands.
- In a circular motion, lightly rub the coffee scrub into your skin.
- Let the coffee scrub sit on your skin for one or two minutes.
- Thoroughly rinse off the coffee scrub under your shower or in your bath, rubbing it off with circular motions until completely removed.
- Once removed and you are dried, you can then moisturise your skin as usual – I find my skin does not need a moisturiser at this point as this scrub provides me with enough hydration.

It is good for your skin and totally pampering to exfoliate it regularly. It is not recommended to do it more than once a week, however. It can damage the skin if you use your exfoliator too frequently and remember – oily skin will require more exfoliation than drier skin.
