Creating my own DIY body oil recipe had been on my to-do list since beginning my quest for natural and chemical free skincare. The great benefit to making your own body oil is that you can tailor it to your individual needs.

Body oils are super beneficial for all skin types, even oily skin needs hydration and moisture to keep it healthy and fresh. They can help balance the skins natural oil production and target problem areas.

Body oils can be super pricey and making your own can save you plenty of money. It is super quick and simple to mix up a batch of natural, chemical free, nourishing body oil in no time.

Below, you can find my DIY body oil recipe that you can quickly make yourself. It can work as a DIY body oil for glowing skin, DIY body oil shimmer, DIY body cleansing oil and so much more.

So, lets start and make our very own DIY body oil!

What Is Body Oil?

A body oil is a mixture of different oils that include carrier oils, essential oils and usually an antioxidant such as vitamin E oil to extend its shelf life. They can be used in place of body moisturisers and lotions and are simple to make, taking only minutes to create.

A body oil is essentially an oil that you can use anywhere on the body below your neck. Body oils should be designed to sink into your skin and won’t leave the skin feeling greasy.

They can range from inexpensive to super luxurious; mineral oils to plant oils. Making your own body oil is a great way to ensure you get the most luxury oils for your skin at the lowest price.

Body Lotion Vs Body Oil

Body oil and body lotion are products that are used to moisturise our skin. However, they do have their differences.

Body lotion is made with water and comes in many varieties that can treat a range of skincare issues, from anti-itch lotions to sun relief lotions for example. Lotions moisturise the skin very well and because they are made with water they can hydrate the skin better than oils for immediate relief. Some lotions also contain ingredients that host long term benefits such as ceramides.

Body oils, on the other hand, contain no water and are natural with no harsh chemicals when homemade. Lotions can contain questionable ingredients that body oils do not as preservatives are required in a lotion recipe.

Research has indicated body oils can help improve our skins barrier function, repairing and moisturising the skin. Body oils do not disrupt the skin’s natural sebum production and can help to balance it making them great for all skin types.

Why Make DIY Body Oil?

There are plenty of benefits to creating your own DIY body oil, and here are some of mine.

It’s Nourishing And Moisturising

The nourishing oils in body oil make for a super moisturising treat for your skin, leaving it glowing, smooth, soft and supple.

It’s Much Cheaper Than Buying A Body Oil

When looking to purchase branded body oils of good quality, they can be super pricey.

Making your own DIY body oil recipe is a much more cost effective option.

You Can Customise It

One of the best things about making your own body oil is that you can completely customise it to the needs of your skin.

Whether that be a homemade body oil for dry skin, DIY body oil for stretch marks, or a vanilla body oil recipe, the ball is in your court.

It’s Natural And Chemical Free

Knowing that what is going into your skincare is all natural and chemical free provides peace of mind.

It Can Balance Sebum Production

Using a body oil with the type of oils I have used in my body oil recipe will not disrupt your body’s natural oil production, unlike many soaps, body cleanses and lotions can do thanks to harsh additives. Body oil can actually help to balance the body’s oil production.

It Can Be Used By All Skin Types

Body oils do not contain any harsh chemicals or additives and can be tailored to be used by all skin types.

eBay and Amazon Australia are quick and easy places to buy ingredients and all the gear you need. Below, I direct you to the best place to buy each ingredient or you can click here to buy now on Amazon or here for eBay. This is how I buy all of these ingredients.

Almond Oil

Almond oil

My moisturising body oil recipe had to include almond oil. It is emollient, which means it helps your skin retain and attract moisture. It can smooth out the skin by filling in the gaps while working as a barrier cream as well.

Almond oil has anti-inflammatory properties, it can reduce eye puffiness, the signs of aging and help to repair damaged skin. It also has a tiny SPF coverage of SPF 5.

I absolutely love almond oil for my skin which is why I make an almond oil body oil. However, it is not the best for oily skin and if you have oily skin, I suggest switching it to cold pressed sunflower oil.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil

Hemp seed oil is a great product for your skin. It can nourish and rejuvenate and is high in essential fatty acids, linoleic acid and alpha-linoleic acid.

It can help to provide moisture to the skin without clogging pores and is non greasy on the skin. When applied to the skin, it is soothing and can help to restore your skin barrier and retain its moisture, resulting in skin that is healthy, well taken care of, hydrated, supple and soft.

Hemp seed oil can be used on all skins types, but is particularly helpful for those with acne, aging skin and eczema.

If you are looking to find an alternative for hemp seed oil you can use blackcurrant oil instead.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil comes in refined and unrefined varieties.

Refined avocado oil is thinner, less aromatic and lighter in colour than unrefined avocado oil and absorbs into the skin quickly.

Unrefined avocado oil is thicker, has a strong aroma and has a darker green colour and absorbs into the skin quickly.

This is the first time I recommend you actually buy the refined version.

Avocado oil contains beta carotene, protein, vitamins A, D and E and fatty acids like oleic acid. All of which are very nourishing for the skin. Benefits of these nutrients include moisturising, anti-aging, skin rejeneration, skin softening and more.

It can be used by all skin types but it is particularly good for those with dry skin, mature skin or eczema.

An alternative oil for avocado oil is olive oil.

Frankincense Essential Oil

The first of the essential oils I like to use in this recipe is frankincense. It is a natural astringent, antiseptic and more and is great for skincare as it can help to heal skin conditions such as wounds and acne.

It is a good choice for those with oily skin, mature skin and aging skin, it can help to heal wounds, cuts and scars. It can be helpful for reducing the appearance of stretch marks. It is known for rejuvenating skin and works as a healing oil.

The aroma of frankincense is fantastic and makes for a luxury body oil recipe. It comes in handy for deep breathing with the ability to reduce stress and anxiety, aid in relaxation and rest and meditation. It provides a comforting feeling and adds a great scent to the body oil.

Note, this recipe uses nearly 2% essential oils which is the maximum recommended amount. If you are sensitive to essential oils or this is for kids or pregnant women, consider lowering the amount.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil is great for your skin. It is an astringent, antiseptic, deodorant, fungicidal and more. It has sebum balancing qualities and because of this, can be used on all skin types.

It is good for spots, acne, rough and chapped skin, psoriasis and eczema. It has qualities that can be used to help wound healing and cuts.

It smells sweet, floral and soft and has an uplifting scent that can ease depression.

Geranium oil does have potential to irritate sensitive skin. It is not recommend to use geranium oil in your first trimester of pregnancy and only in low dilutions in the second and third trimesters. See your healthcare provider for more information.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is great for a scented body oil recipe. It is one of my favourite scents and has many benefits for the skin as well.

It is antiseptic, antimicrobial, fungicidal, anti-inflammatory and so on. It can be used by all skin types but has been known to cause dermatitis in those who have over used it.

Lavender essential oil can be used for scars, cuts, burns, rashes and bites. It can promote the growth of skin cells which makes it a great choice for aging skin. It can also help to soothe allergies like psoriasis and eczema.

Those with acne prone skin can also benefit from lavender essential oil as it has the ability to kill bacteria and unclog pores. You can use it for reducing the appearance of stretch marks and to smooth out wrinkle lines.

Other awesome benefits include easing inflammation, joint aches and muscular pains, reducing stress and anxiety and depression.

Of course, you can switch any of these essential oils for any that you prefer or you could make this homemade body oil for glowing skin without essential oils. Up to you.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E OIlPin
Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil is an antioxidant that is great for your skin. It can help repair problem skin and soften and smooth the skin.

For this recipe, the vitamin E oil is essentially only being used to extend the shelf life of your DIY body oil with vitamin E.

When the oils in your body oil are exposed to air, they slowly start to oxidise which causes them to go rancid. Using your body oil within 6 months is necessary if you do not want this to occur.

However, this is where vitamin E, an antioxidant, helps to delay this process and extend the life of your body oil.

Vitamin E oil is not essential in your body oil recipe if you do not have it. Especially if you plan to use your body oil right away and it is only you using it.

How To Make Your Own Body Oil For Glowing Skin

Making your own natural body oil recipe is super simple and easy – just mix your ingredients together.

In the DIY body oil recipe, I have listed the ingredients in grams as this ensures the correct amount of ingredients are used, such as the essential oils which can cause issues if too much is used.

A good digital scale will make your life a lot easier than measuring this recipe in spoons and cups. I use these digital scales I bought on Amazon.

Weighing and mixing the oils

You can look up the amounts using a different measuring system if you don’t want to weigh it.

You don’t have to worry about getting the ingredients to the exact .01 gram as I find it impossible to weigh, for example, 0.05 grams of vitamin E oil. Just make sure that you don’t have more than 2% (1 gram in this recipe) of essential oils.

In this video, you’ll see that I don’t get everything 100% however the resulting body oil is amazing.

I mix the essential oils together first to ensure I like the blend before I combine them with the other oils.

I like to package my homemade body oil in an amber bottle (it keeps the light out) with a pipette. You can buy them on eBay here.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Weigh and combine the essential oils and vitamin E oil and mix
  2. In a separate container, add one of the other oils at a time
  3. Mix
  4. Combine the essential oils and vitamin E with the other oil mixture
  5. Mix

Notes

I love using this DIY scented body oil at any time of day for how soft and nourished my skin feels as well as the boost the essential oils give me.

It can be very difficult to measure ingredients to 0.01 grams. As long as you don't use over 1.00 grams of essential oils all up in this recipe, it'll be fine if the ingredients are small amounts off.

It doesn't matter which order you add the ingredients. I like to add the essential oils together first so I can smell them and make sure I'm happy with the blend if I haven't used the exact mixture before.
