Do you struggle with dry/oily skin? You certainly aren’t the only one. Branded cleansers are often soap based and can often contain chemical additives. These ingredients can leave the skin feeling dry, tight, and can create an imbalance of your skin’s natural oil production.

My DIY cleansing oil is gentle on the skin, chemical free, all natural and will leave your skin feeling supple and smooth. Cleansing oil recipes are great at removing excess oil from the skin while leaving the skin feeling moisturised and soft.

Using oils to cleanse the skin seemed strange to me at first. However, cleansing oils work as solvents that can dissolve similar matter. Oils are attracted to other oils, like oils found in makeup or the sebum on our skin. This is how the oil cleansing method came to be, with the idea that like dissolves like.

DIY oil based cleanser can be used on all skin types, even oily skin. Soap based cleansers or cleansers containing harsh chemicals can strip the skin of their natural oils and leave the skin unbalanced and working harder to compensate for all the lost oils. Over time this can lead to dry and/or oily skin.

This is why cleansing facial oils can be used on all skin types. They will not disrupt the natural balance of your skin, and this is a big part of the reason I chose to start making my own DIY facial cleansing oil.

How to make oil cleanser for face? Its actually super simple and could save you money.

In this guide, I will be walking you through how to make facial cleansing oil as well as why you should be making your own facial cleansing oil recipe. Below, I will also discuss the benefits of my DIY cleansing oil recipe. And of course, I give you the recipe as well as written and video instructions.

So lets begin and make a DIY cleansing oil!

What Is A DIY Cleansing Oil?

DIY face cleansing oil is a chemical free, gentle and mild way to cleanse your skin without leaving your skin with irritation or disrupting your skin’s natural oil barrier.

Cleansing oils are comprised of a combination of natural oils rather than the more common water/soap based cleansers that can contain harsh chemical additives that can disrupt the skin’s natural oil production.

DIY oil cleanser for oily skin seems like a strange idea on the surface. However, cleansing oil works by dissolving excess face oils with the cleansing oils. Soap based cleansers can strip the skin of their natural oils and leave the skin working over time to produce more oil, which can often leave the skin oily/dry.

Facial cleansing oils are a great way to cleanse your skin without disrupting this balance.

DIY facial oil cleanser can also be used to remove your makeup and debris on the skin.

Oil cleansing recipes are a great way to give your skin a gentle and natural cleanse while leaving it feeling moisturised.

Why Make Your Own Cleansing Oil Recipe?

There are plenty of reasons to make your own DIY oil cleanser recipe and here are some of mine.

Can Remove Makeup And Other Products

An oil cleanser homemade can help you easily and quickly remove stubborn makeup, from your foundation to eye makeup. You can also use your DIY makeup cleansing oil to remove your sunscreen and other products. It is gentle and will not irritate the skin. It also means you can ditch buying extra products for removing your makeup.

Natural And Chemical Free

Oil cleansers are natural and chemical free. They do not irritate the skin, and you will know exactly what ingredients are going onto your skin without any worry.

Will Leave Skin Soft And Supple

Using an oil based cleanser DIY will leave your skin feeling moisturised, soft and supple.

Cleans Skin Without Stripping

Soap based cleansers can strip the oils from our skin which can lead to breakouts and oily or dry skin. Oil cleansers go deep into the skins pores and dissolves the sebum effectively cleaning the skin without stripping or irritating it.

Can Be Used On All Skin Types

Facial cleansing oils can be used on all skin types from those with dry skin, oily skin and acne prone skin.

There are specific oils that are better for some conditions over others. When looking how to make cleansing oil for face, choose oils that are known to help your skin type whether that is a DIY cleansing oil for acne prone skin or a DIY oil cleanser for mature skin.

Customisable

As mentioned above, you can customise your oil cleanser for any skin type. You can also change up your DIY oil cleanser from the summer to winter months as your skin can have different needs during these periods.

Can Save You Money

Making your own DIY oil cleanser can save you money in the long run. Facial cleansers are often expensive and filled with soaps and harsh chemicals that can worsen skin conditions and lead to the need of purchasing additional skincare.

A little goes a long way with an oil cleanser and it can double as an effective makeup remover which removes the need for purchasing makeup remover as well.

Ingredients For The Best DIY Oil Cleanser

DIY facial cleansing oil is designed to be removed after you use it, so I don’t recommend you use expensive oils especially as you don’t need to for an effective product.

If you especially want to use your cleanser to get rid of eye makeup, I recommend you either don’t add any essential oil or no more than 0.5% (the recipe below is nearly 2% so divide the quantities by four).

eBay and Amazon Australia are quick and easy places to buy ingredients and all the gear you need. Below, I direct you to the best place to buy each ingredient or you can click here to buy now on Amazon or here for eBay. This is how I buy all of these ingredients.

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is a carrier oil that is suitable for all skin types, it is light, non comedogenic, and very absorbent. It is high in essential fatty acids, particularly in linoleic acid and oleic acid. Both of these fatty acids are fantastic for the skin.

It is a good source of vitamin E and rich in multiple nutrients and antioxidants that are great for the skin. It is moisturising, nourishing and softening for the skin. Make sure you use the unrefined, cold pressed variety though and not the refined, cooking oil type.

Good alternatives to sunflower oil are apricot oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil or extra virgin olive oil. These are the best oils for oil cleansing along with castor oil.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is another carrier oil that is rich in fatty acids. It is high in ricinoleic acid, the fatty acid which is what makes castor oil a unique oil.

Castor oil is very slow absorbing and gives a shiny, thick, protective layer that has a drawing action and attracts dirt to it. It is a great ingredient to use in cleansing products for this reason. It can also be used to make great lip balm.

Castor oil has antiviral and antimicrobial properties making it a treatment choice for those with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne, mature, dry, etc.

The qualities of castor oil can provide softness and smoothness to the skin. Some people can have an allergic reaction to castor oil due to its high ricinoleic acid content though so do a patch test if you aren’t sure.

Castor oil is a great ingredient in your oil cleansing method for face, and I recommend you use some. However, it is thick so you should only use it mixed with another oil like sunflower. I don’t recommend using more than 30% castor oil.

Mandarin Essential Oil

Mandarin essential oil is a light and mild oil that is great for most skin types. It can help reduce acne scars, stretch marks and other scars on the skin.

It is gentle and smells rejuvenating and invigorating. It can help reduce the risk of skin infections by preventing fungal and bacterial development.

Applying mandarin oil with a carrier oil like one above is a great way you can help to reduce the appearance of scars, age spots, brighten the skin and reduce oily skin. The scent can also help alleviate insomnia and reduce stress.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender oil is antimicrobial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, fungicidal and much more. It is a great choice for all skin types but can cause dermatitis on those who overuse it.

Lavender oil has the ability to promote the growth of new skin cells, making it a great choice for aging skin. It can be used for healing burns, scars, cuts, bites and rashes and can soothe certain allergies like eczema and psoriasis.

Lavender oil can be used for those with acne prone skin as it can unclog pores and kill bacteria on the skin. It is also used for smoothing out wrinkles and reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

Other great benefits of lavender essential oil include the ability to ease joint aches, muscular pains and inflammation. It can reduce your anxiety, stress, depression and help get you to sleep at night.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang essential oil can be used by all skin types, particularly those with dry, mature, oily or sensitive skin. It has plenty of benefits for the skin.

Ylang Ylang oil is an antiseptic and an aphrodisiac and can help regulate sebum production. It is hydrating for the skin and can help the skin maintain its oil production to keep it balanced and nourished.

The antiseptic properties found in Ylang Ylang oil can even heal cuts from dry skin. It is great for moisturising the skin, hydrating and softening.

Other great benefits of Ylang Ylang essential oil include its ability to lower blood pressure and improve circulation. Its aroma has uplifting, sensual qualities which can help to reduce stress, insomnia and depression. It is great for encouraging relaxation.

I especially love using this oil in this homemade oil face cleanser because it helps me feel relaxed and sleepy. It’s perfect for evening use.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil is great for the skin, it is an antioxidant that can assist in repairing skin problems, smooth and soften the skin.

In this recipe however, it is being used primarily as a way to extend the shelf life of your homemade cleansing oil.

Oils that are exposed to air start to oxidise which is what causes them to go rancid. If you do not use your facial oil within 6 months, this could happen.

Vitamin E, an antioxidant, helps to slow this process down and last longer.

If, however, you do not have vitamin E oil, you don’t have to add it to your facial cleanser. Especially if you are planning to use it straight away and it is only for you.

How To Make Cleansing Oil DIY

When it comes to how to make cleansing oil at home, it is super easy! You simply mix the ingredients together.

In fact, natural skincare recipes like this are so easy that there is no reason you wouldn’t want to make this oil based cleanser at home. Better yet, your skin will love you for it.

In this oil face cleanser recipe, I list all the ingredients in grams. Having the recipe this way ensures we use the correct amount of ingredients like essential oils that can cause problems if we use too much.

If you have good digital scales, this also makes it so much easier than measuring everything in cups and spoons. I use these digital scales I bought on Amazon.

It’s super easy to make this homemade cleansing oil – just mix everything together!

If you don’t want to weigh, you can do an internet search for the amounts using another measurement system.

Don’t worry about weighing everything perfectly to the 0.01 gram – it’s very hard to do! As you can see in the video of me making this cleansing oil, I don’t succeed in getting every measurement perfect, but I promise, it still leads to fabulous results.

The main thing is that you don’t use more than 2% essential oils which is 1 gram all up in this recipe. I like to mix my essential oils together first to make sure I’m happy with the blend before adding it to the other ingredients.

I find the best way to package my DIY oil face cleanser is in a dispenser with pump (like for hand soap). You can buy them on eBay here.

Total Time: 5 minutes

You won't be sorry you made this effective, gentle and inexpensive DIY cleansing oil for face. It's just so good!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Measure the essential oils and vitamin E oil and mix together
  2. Mix the sunflower and castor oils together in a separate container
  3. Combine all ingredients and mix
  4. Pour into a bottle to store using a funnel

Notes

It can be very difficult to measure ingredients to 0.01 grams. As long as you don't use over 1.00 grams of essential oils all up in this recipe, it'll be fine if the ingredients are small amounts off.

It doesn't matter which order you add the ingredients. I like to add the essential oils together first so I can smell them and make sure I'm happy with the blend if I haven't used the exact mixture before.

I recommend you use a dispenser with a pump to store your cleansing oil so you are all set to use it.
