DIY Skincare Recipes, Ingredients + Everything You Need To Know

Sick of reading the ingredients in your skincare and not having a clue what any of it is? I know I was. I have been on a journey to go completely natural and chemical free with my skincare and not only have I learned a lot, I have thoroughly enjoyed making my own natural skincare homemade.

We all know our skin is our largest organ, it protects us from bacteria, temperature, chemicals and gives us sensation. Needless to say, your skin is pretty important and protecting it and keeping it healthy is equally as important. However it is difficult to know how to achieve this with so much information and products available, it can make it all super confusing.

When you create your own natural homemade skincare you know exactly what is going onto your skin, you can customise the ingredients to suit your skincare needs and it is a cheaper option than purchasing branded skincare.

Best DIY Skincare Recipes And Ingredients

Making your own skincare is also super simple and easy. I have been really surprised by how easy it is. Even if you are making homemade vegan skin care recipes, DIY organic skin care or DIY anti aging skin care, it is very easy to customise your skincare to your needs when creating your own.

The ingredients I choose to use in my homemade skin products are super nourishing, moisturising, hydrating and soothing for the skin. Many of the ingredients have a heap of nutrients and benefits for the skin, short and long term and they are totally luxurious to use.

Why Make DIY Skincare?

There are many advantages to making your own skincare. Here are some of them.

You Can Use Natural Ingredients

One of the best benefits, and one of the reasons I chose to start making my own skincare, is that you can choose to use all natural ingredient. This means no chemicals or strange additives you can barely pronounce. You choose the ingredients and you know exactly what is going inside of it.

The natural and chemical free ingredients will not irritate the skin and will leave you with more peace of mind that you are protecting and nourishing your skin with nature’s goodness.

You Can Customise The Ingredients

Whether you are looking to create homemade organic skin care products, natural anti aging skin care DIY, a natural skin moisturiser recipe or specific DIY skin treatments, it is easy to create customised skincare for your different skin needs. Customising the ingredients means you can control what is added and use the ingredients that you love in your skin care home remedy.

If you have sensitive skin, making your own natural skin recipes means you are able to avoid any ingredients that your skin does not tolerate and use the ingredients it thrives off instead. If you are vegan/vegetarian you make can also ensure your ingredients are suited to this.

You Can Save Money

Even the best DIY skin care you can make is going to be cheaper than some of the expensive branded stuff.

Homemade natural skin care products can save you money particularly in the long run.

Branded skincare is often sold in small quantities with a large price tag. You can find reasonably priced natural skincare, however you will be surprised at how cheap making your own can be.

It’s Fun

I have really enjoyed creating my own skincare products and recipes, it is super fun and creative. If you have children, it is a great activity you can do together, and teach them all about the ingredients.

They will enjoy creating their own skincare and may be more inclined to use it.

It Keeps Your Skin Healthy And Moisturised

DIY natural skin care recipes can help to keep your skin fresh, healthy and moisturised. The ingredients I recommend you using, as you will see below, are all very nourishing and beneficial for your skin.

Your skin needs protecting and nourishing and making your own skincare can do a great job of this.

What Natural Homemade Skin Care Can You Make?

You can create pretty much any type of recipes for natural skin care you’d like, it can be really surprising how many skincare products are simple and easy to make.

You could consider creating your own beeswax skin care recipes, DIY organic skin care recipes, homemade skin treatment, moisturisers, body oils, the list goes on.

You can also create variations in recipes. For example, create several body oils suited for different moods/needs. You could almost create an endless amount of skincare if you really wanted to.

DIY Skin Care Ingredients

If there was one thing that made me hesitate when it came to getting started with making DIY skincare, it was that many of the homemade skin care ingredients weren’t something in the local supermarket or that I had even heard of before.

However, once I got over that there would be a learning curve involved, like there is with anything, I realised it really isn’t hard to get homemade skin care ingredients. I could order everything online at eBay or Amazon quickly and easily.

I also quickly became familiar with the ingredients and what I needed and found I could make a lot of different great products with just a butter, carrier oil, a wax and essential oils.

Below, I talk more about the types of ingredients you’ll need to get started in your journey to make homemade skin care products.

Of course, not every ingredient you could possibly ever need is listed here, but you can easily look at the recipes below for the full ingredient list of any DIY natural skin care products that catch your eye.

Butters

Natural butters for the skin come from the extracts of natural products such as nuts, seeds and beans. These include butters like shea butter, mango butter and cocoa butter.

These butters are full of fatty acids that make them solid at room temperature. They are thick and they do not contain water.

When you add one of these natural butters to your skin care recipes they are known for adding stability and viscosity. They are commonly found in lotions, creams, lip balms, soaps and much more.

The nutrients found in these butters are helpful for soothing the skin and they melt on contact with the skin; adding moisture, softness and suppleness. They can help to relieve dry skin issues like roughness, dryness, chapping and irritations.

Butters are some of my favourite natural skincare products, with shea butter (find it here) being one of my most favourite natural skincare ingredients.

Waxes

Waxes are often used in many skincare formulations as they provide benefits to the final result of the skin care product. Waxes help in improving stability and consistency while increasing the viscosity of the product. They have a high melting point of above 50 degrees celcius.

Waxes are great products to include in lip balms, for example, so they will not melt on a hot summer’s day. There are a number of origins of wax and these include those of animal origin, vegetable origin and synthetic origin.

Examples of each of these include beeswax – animal origin, soy wax – vegetable origin, and polyolefin wax – synthetic wax.

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are oils that are made from plants. These can include avocado oil, almond oil, coconut oil, and so much more. These carrier oils are primarily used to help dilute essential oils and help carry them to absorb into the skin better. It is important to use a carrier oil with essential oils for use in skincare as they are potent oils that can irritate the skin when applied directly without dilution.

Many carrier oils offer very little aromatics and they do not interfere with the properties and aromas of the essential oils. Carrier oils can be used by themselves or accompanied by other oils.

Carrier oils make for easy homemade skin care. They are simple to use, easy to mix up and leave the skin super nourished and taken care of.

Essential Oils

Essential oils can benefit health in a number of ways and in your skincare recipes, they can provide luxury and great aroma. There are specific essential oils that can benefit your skin and overall health. I have listed just a few of these below:

  • Lavender oil: Lavender oil smells great. It is my favourite essential oil to use. It can help you relax and unwind and help keep you alert.
  • Rose oil: Rose oil smells beautiful, can help to stimulate your mind and can be helpful for skin imperfections.
  • Peppermint oil: A nice fresh scent with a cool feel. Helpful to focus the mind and reduce inflammation.
  • Eucalyptus oil: There are many benefits of eucalyptus oil, from soothing irritated skin to reducing inflammation. It is good for the respiratory system, can help scalp itchiness and pain.
  • Tea tree oil: You can use tea tree oil in the bath to relieve inflammation, respiratory issues, disinfect your pores and more.
  • Chamomile oil: A relaxing effect, relieve insomnia and wind down.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil is a great ingredient for your skin. Being an antioxidant, it can help in repairing damaged skin, smoothing and softening the skin.

In most of my skincare recipes, however, I primarily use vitamin E oil as a way to preserve a lot of my homemade skincare.

Oils that have been exposed to the air will start to slowly oxidise. This is what causes oils to go rancid and if you don’t plan on using your skincare within 6 months, this could happen.

Vitamin E, being an antioxidant, is going to help to slow this process down and help your skincare last longer while adding benefits like smoothing and softening your skin.

You do not have to add vitamin E oil if you do not want to, especially if you plan on using your skin care within 6 months and it is only you planning to use it.

Epsom Salts

Some of the best homemade skin care products (like my bath tea bags below) will include Epsom salts to help relieve aching, tense, sore and cramping muscles. When you bath with warm water and Epsom salts, they work magic, being super soothing and relieving pain.

Epsom salts can draw the nasty toxins out from your body, they can reduce bodily inflammation, can reduce stress and more.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is another great ingredient you can add to your homemade organic skin care. Oatmeal may seem a strange ingredient to add in your skincare. However, oats have been used for centuries for easing conditions of the skin.

Oatmeal binds to our skin and forms a protective barrier which helps to keep moisture in our skin. Oatmeal can also help to reduce inflamed skin and clean the skin. Oatmeal baths are a known remedy for itchy and dry skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Arrowroot Powder

Arrowroot powder is used primarily in many of my skincare recipes as a way to reduce the oiliness of my homemade creams. It does a great job of absorbing all the extra oils in my homemade body butters which then reduces the oily feel.

Not only this, but arrowroot powder contains B vitamins that are known to help the skin to absorb other nutrients – which helps your skin to absorb the other ingredients in your skincare recipes. These B vitamins can also help improve circulation.

You could also try using tapioca flour or cornstarch instead.
