A bath melt is a great choice for providing deep moisturisation in the bath and they are great for those with dry skin. They are a great way to pamper yourself and will leave your skin feeling so taken care of. Super helpful for those who experience rough or dry skin or if you live in dry and cold climates.
I have been on a journey for some time now to transform the skincare I use to be as natural and chemical free as possible. There are many skincare products that contain chemical and synthetic additives that can have a number of unwanted side effects and I try to avoid these as much as possible.
These bath melts are completely natural and chemical free and will not disrupt your skins natural balance.
I personally experience dry skin, especially in the cold months and while these are not your typical bubble bath melt they are a totally replenishing, rejuvenating, hydrating and a soothing treat for the skin.
The nourishing ingredients in this recipe will provide you with plenty of benefits from anti-inflammatory properties to the relaxing and delicious combined scent of chocolate mandarin.
So, lets get started and learn how to make a bath melt.
What Is A Bath Melt?
A bath melt is a small and solid bar that you immerse into your tub to release beautiful aroma and moisturising oils. They are made from a mixture of oils and butters that are poured into molds and left to set at room temperature to become solid.
I personally use cocoa butter and sunflower oil in my diy bath melt as I enjoy this combination. However, you could choose from a wide range of different butters and oils.
The cocoa butter in this recipe helps to keep the bath melt solid at room temperature. Once it hits the warm bath, it gently melts to create a soothing, moisturising and fragrant chocolate mandarin bath.
Bath melts are easy to make and simple to use. If you are new to creating skincare products, this is a great one to start with.

Ingredients For The Best DIY Bath Melt
One of the best things about making your own bath melts is that you barely need any ingredients. You don’t have to use the butter and oil I mention below and can switch these to other oils and butters if you wish. However, I do recommend cocoa butter the most because:
- It smells delicious. I love the chocolate scent
- It’s a harder butter so helps to keep your bath melt solid. When I use shea butter, it can melt a little at room temperature
You could switch it to shea butter, mango butter or another option though.
For the oil, I do love sunlower oil in this combination, but you can switch this too. Coconut oil can be particularly nice in a bath melt and give it a coconut scent too.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter has long been a popular product in cooking desserts and sweets for the creaminess it adds. It is only recently that it has become a popular product for the use in hair and skincare as well.
Cocoa butter comes from the beans of cocoa plants which for thousands of years has been used by humans to make chocolate. Mayans once referred to cocoa butter as “the food of the gods”.
Cocoa butter is a solid fat at room temperature and in this recipe, it works great for solidifying the bath melt.
In skincare, cocoa butter has a number of benefits to offer. It is super moisturising. It contains anti bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that are protective for your skin.
It can also make the skin look younger. It promotes wound healing, and it can strengthen the hair.

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is a very light oil that is absorbed really quickly by the skin. It is a suitable oil for all skin types including oily, dry and acne prone skin types.
Sunflower oil is high in the essential fatty acids, linoleic acid and oleic acids, as well as antioxidants that are great for your skin. The benefits of sunflower oil on the skin include skin softening, nourishment and moisturisation.
When you are purchasing your sunflower oil, please make sure you are buying the cold pressed/unrefined variety and not the refined cooking oil type of sunflower oil.

Mandarin Essential Oil

Mandarin essential oil is a mild and light essential oil that is a suitable choice for most skin types as it is gentle on the skin, and it offers a rejuvenating and invigorating aroma.
Mandarin essential oil can be used to help reduce the look of scars and stretch marks on the skin. It is fungicidal and anti-bacterial – meaning it can also be used to help reduce the risk of skin infections by preventing bacteria and fungus developing on the skin.
Using a carrier oil like sunflower oil and cocoa butter with mandarin essential oil is a great way to get all of the awesome benefits mandarin oil has to offer. From brightening the skin, reducing age spots and oiliness on the skin to offering aromatherapy benefits like alleviating insomnia and aiding in relaxation.
You could choose to use any essential oil you’d like. However, I love the mixture of cocoa butter and mandarin scents as it smells delicious.

How To Make A Bath Melt
It is super straightforward to make your very own bath melt. It couldn’t be easier and is a great recipe for beginners and seasoned skincare makers alike. The benefits are totally worth the small effort it takes!
The recipe below makes a beautifully creamy bath melt that smells of delicious chocolate mandarin and will have you totally relaxed and silky soft.
To begin, I recommend collecting everything you need to create your bath melts to make it a smooth process and having your ingredients and molds ready to grab.

From there, you basically need to just melt and mix all the ingredients together. Start by adding and melting your solid shea butter and sunflower oil, let it cool a little and add your mandarin oil. Too Easy!
I suggest using a double boiler to do this as it ensures your products do not overheat.

Once you have melted and mixed the ingredients you can pour them into your chosen molds. Ensure your bath melts are not exposed to any water and let them come to room temperature to set solid. If you’d like, you can put them in the fridge to fasten this process up.

Once they have set and come to room temperature, you can simply pop them out of their molds and they are ready to use!
