Facial mists are light and refreshing and can benefit your skin in a number of ways. They can be used before and after you apply your makeup and are great for delivering quick moisture to your skin. Additionally, they can be used before applying a serum as it can help your skin to absorb the oils easier.
They are portable and easy to use for whenever your skin may need some help throughout the day. The ingredients are soothing, nourishing and hydrating for your skin and will leave your skin feeling soft, moisturised and refreshed.
Since my pledge to use natural and chemical free products on my skin, I have been interested in creating my own natural moisturising face spray. I have been surprised by how quick and easy it is to create and with benefits that leave me wishing I’d tried it sooner.
You may need to purchase some of the required ingredients before making your own organic face mist as the preservatives required are not typically something you will have on hand. Unless you do – then great! I talk more about this further in the guide.
My DIY aloe vera face mist is water based and as such requires preservatives to ensure bacteria does not grow. Many recipes for homemade face mists do no contain preservatives which runs the risk of bacteria growing in your mist. Do not fret though – the preservatives in this recipe are natural and will save exposing your skin to any harmful bacteria.
In this guide, I will be running you through all you need to know about making your own homemade face spritz! Whether you are looking for a DIY face mist for glowing skin, a DIY face mist for dry skin or a DIY hydrating face spray, this guide is here to help.
What Is A Face Mist? Is It The Same As A Face Spritz?
A hydrating face spray DIY is a mixture of ingredients that are used to refresh and hydrate the skin, they are stored in mist spray bottles to make applying it super convenient and easy.
Facial mists and facial spritzers are the same thing, just different names. They are both used for the same purpose, to deliver quick hydration to the skin – leaving it feeling soothed and refreshed.
You can use a facial mist before and after applying makeup and they can be used before applying serums to increase the absorption of oils (which is what I do with my serum here)
There are a heap of different ingredients you could choose to use in a facial mist/spritz. However, a facial mist really only requires a few ingredients. The ingredients I have chosen are soothing, nourishing and moisturising for the skin and it leaves my skin feeling soothed and refreshed throughout the day.

Many online recipes for facial mists do not include a preservative and if you choose to make one of these mists they will either need to be used within a couple of days or the risk of harmful bacteria growing in your mist is very real.
The preservatives I have chosen are natural, easy to use, are not harmful to your skin and ensure a longer shelf life.
You can use your facial mist anytime throughout the day when you want to give your skin some extra TLC.
What Does Face Mist Do?
Facial mists are used to deliver quick hydration to your skin. They are great to use when your skin is looking/feeling dull and dry or for times when your makeup is looking dry and cakey.
Simply spritz some of your aloe vera face spray DIY onto your face and you will instantly feel refreshed, soothed and it will help your skin to glow and appear softer.
Why Make A Hydrating Face Mist DIY?
I can think of plenty of reasons why you should be making a face spray for glowing skin at home and here are a few of them.
Refreshing And Soothing
My natural facial mist is super soothing and refreshing and is perfect for those who are looking for quick hydration throughout the day.
If you live in a warm/hot climate they can be great for cooling off and if you live in a cooler climate they are great for keeping the skin hydrated.
Convenient And Portable
You can easily take your homemade facial mist with you on the road, at work, anywhere! It is super portable and the spray bottle means you can have moisturised skin in a few seconds without any sticky fingers.
All Natural
One of the greatest benefits of making your own DIY aloe vera face spray is that you can use ingredients that are completely natural.
A great idea for those like me who are looking for new skin care products to reduce the amount of synthentic additives in their routine.
Cheap and Easy
Making a face mist is relatively cheap, especially when compared to how much store bought natural face mists can cost. Although you may need to purchase ingredients, they are easy to find and will leave you with awesome results.
Makes A Great Gift
This face mist makes a perfect gift for your friends and family. They will appreciate the effort and will be in love with the results.
Ingredients For The Best Homemade Face Mist Spray
One of the best things about this DIY face spray for glowing skin is that you don’t need many ingredients to make it, and these are all easy to buy online.
eBay and Amazon Australia are quick and easy places to buy ingredients and all the gear you need. Below, I direct you to the best place to buy each ingredient or you can click here to buy now on Amazon or here for eBay. This is how I buy all of these ingredients.
Rose Hydrosol

Rose hydrosol (also known as a flower water) is a natural byproduct when distilling rose essential oils. The properties found in rose hydrosol are similar to those found in rose essential oil, just a more mild form.
I was very interested in how to make a rose water face mist as this ingredient has many benefits to offer the skin. To name a few, rose hydrosol can provide the skin with a light and cooling hydration, it contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities that can help those who suffer with dry skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and irritated skin.
When purchasing your rose hydrosol, I recommend you check the ingredients to ensure what you are buying is true rose hydrosol. A true rose hydrosol/rose water will only contain rose water and perhaps a preservative. If the rose water includes aqua (water) as the first ingredient or includes alcohol in its ingredients list, this is not true rose water, it is water mixed with rose essential oil.
Although some rose hyrosols may contain a preservative, it is still essential that we add our natural preservative to our recipe as we are adding additional ingredients in our face mist.

Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera juice is a super popular product for the skin, and it is not a surprise why!
Aloe Vera Juice is an awesome product for the skin as it is nourishing, soothing, super cheap and easy to find. It contains anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, vitamins A, C and enzymes that have cooling and soothing effects and soften and hydrate the skin. Aloe vera can be used to treat burns, dry skin and acne.
Aloe vera juice also contains astringent qualities that can help to treat oily skin by dissolving excessive oils, it can also work to tighten and tone your pores.
If you want to get a more extended shelf life out of your aloe vera juice it is best to purchase it from a supplier. You can also use concentrated aloe vera juice or aloe vera powder. You will need to adjust the recipe if using concentrated forms of aloe vera though.

Glycerin

Glycerin is another popular natural product for the skin. It is known as a humectant, which means it attracts water to your skin, helping to keep it hydrated.
It has a texture that is sticky and it is sweet and mild in taste. It is great for your skin as it is a humectant. It helps to keep the skin moisturised and to refresh and soothe your skin. Glycerin is a good choice for those with oily skin as being a humectant, it draws the water from the air to the skin, hydrating and moisturising it without causing additional oiliness.
This recipe only calls for a small amount of glycerin, making up only a small percentage of this recipe. A little goes a long way.
Glycerin is cheap and easy to find.

Do You Need A Preservative?

Yes. As soon as you are using any ingredients which include water, as is the case with this moisture face spray, you need to use a preservative. This is to protect your DIY face spray moisturiser against waterborne bacteria and microbial contamination.
Many random recipes for how to make face spray online may not include a preservative and you can chose not to. HOWEVER, you do run the real risk of bad bacteria growing in your face mist. I do not recommend you make any skincare product which contains water-based products without a preservative.
Sodium Benzoate And Potassium Sorbate

There are many different preservatives you can use in your DIY natural skincare. I recommend using a combination of these two because:
- They are natural preservatives. If you want your skincare products to only use natural ingredients, you only have limited choices. These chemicals are natural and easy to use.
- They are available easily in Australia on eBay. Many natural preservatives that are suitable for this recipe are not.
They are both organic acids commonly used for food preservation. They are soluble, odourless and clear when dissolved.
They are best used when the pH of the product you are adding it to is less than 5.5.
Click here to buy sodium benzoate on eBay or here for potassium sorbate (also on eBay).
How To Make Your Own Face Mist
How to make face spray mist? It’s very straightforward to make your own hydrating face mist – simply add the ingredients one at a time while you keep mixing.
Add the preservatives to the hydrosol first and make sure they are fully dissolved before adding more ingredients.

I then recommend you place it in a spray bottle for easy application. Just too easy!

Do You Need To Test The pH Of Your DIY Face Mist Spray?
There is one step which can feel a little trickier when first using preservatives and that’s measuring the pH of your spray.

This is important since the preservatives will only work within a certain range. For this DIY hydrating face mist recipe, you want to check that the pH is between 4 – 5.5. It should be, but it’s worth checking. Otherwise, the preservative won’t work correctly.
I simply place a drop of the face mist on these pH strips on eBay before I pour the mixture into the spray bottle.

To use your face spray, simply spritz it a few times from the top to the bottom of your face. You will only require a couple of spritz to get the soothing and refreshing effects from your facial spray.
