I have tried many branded lip balms and have been left disappointed by the results. I find they are either filled with chemicals or they do nothing but apply a small coating to my lips.

Why Cocoa Butter Lip Balm?
Cocoa butter is a great choice of ingredient in your DIY lip balm. I have played around with a few different butters and have found cocoa butter to be ultra soothing and softening on my lips. Here are some other reasons why I love using it in my lip balm:
- Cocoa butter contains anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce swelling, redness and rashes.
- Cocoa butter has emollient properties that help to deeply moisturise the lips and protect the lips against extreme temperatures.
- Cocoa butter has a delicious chocolate aroma.
- It has a melting point of around 33 degrees celcius; melts onto the skin but keeps a solidified form in lip balm.
- It contains vitamin E which is known for its healing and skin restorative properties.

Ingredients For The Best Lip Balm Recipe With Cocoa Butter

One of the best things about this easy cocoa lip balm recipe is that it’s quick to make and there is some flexibility in the ingredients that you can use. Below, I give alternatives where I can. You also only need three ingredients to make a great lip balm. Cocoa butter, a wax and an oil (like almond oil or coconut oil below).
eBay and Amazon Australia are quick and easy places to buy ingredients and all the gear you need. Below, I direct you to the best place to buy each ingredient or you can click here to buy now on Amazon or here for eBay. This is how I buy all of these ingredients.
Note that I also have two recipes below. You don’t need the pink mica and geranium essential oil if you decide to make the chocolate lip balm recipe. You also only need almond oil OR coconut oil.
It’s also ok to switch the oils used in the recipe. For example, you can make the turkish delight lip balm using coconut oil instead of almond oil (so it will be more like a coconut turkish delight flavour).
Almond Oil

I love to use almond oil. It’s a great choice for lip balms as it has emollient qualities that help your lips to retain moisture.
Almonds oil is a super nourishing ingredient that is soothing and helps to soften the lips and works particularly well on cracked or dry lips. It also provides a tiny amount of protection from the sun (SPF 5).
It contains high amounts of vitamin E, known for its healing properties, it’s high in antioxidants and a range of vitamins and minerals. It is good stuff.
If you are allergic to nuts, almond oil is best avoided and coconut oil would be the better option in this recipe for you.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a favourite of mine, along with plenty of others who use it. Totally natural, nourishing and a super versatile product with uses from skincare, hair care to cooking. It is also a handy product in lip balms.
It contains lauric acid which is an essential fatty acid that is great for your skin. With anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties it helps to keep your lips free from infection.
Coconut oil also contains a good amount of proteins and vitamin E which help to heal and hydrate your skin and are helpful in repairing damaged skin. It is great in lip balms because of these qualities.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is a great ingredient in DIY lip balms. It is full of essential fatty acids like oleic acid, vitamins E and K and antioxidants, all of which are beneficial for healthy, moisturised lips.
Cocoa butter has a lovely chocolate aroma which adds to the Turkish delight scent in this lip balm. It is also a natural emollient that provides a barrier on the lips helping to keep the surface of the lips moisturised and the skin beneath hydrated.
It is easily applied on the lips and will soften and soothe them. Cocoa butter has anti-inflammatory properties that could help swollen lips and rashes.
Remember to purchase unrefined cocoa butter for you lip balm recipe cocoa butter.
You could also switch cocoa butter for shea butter, although cocoa butter is just beautiful in lip balm.

Beeswax

Beeswax is a handy ingredient for solidifying this lip balm. However, it also holds a heap of cosmetic and medicinal benefits as well.
Beeswax works as a natural exfoliant, an emollient and a humectant. It can be used to help heal abrasions as it provides a barrier to stop bacteria entering. It is calming, soothing, hydrating, skin repairing and so much more.
It also holds anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities that can help conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
You can vary the amount of beeswax to make your lip balm harder or softer although I don’t recommend you make it much softer or it may not work well in a lip balm tube. However, if you wanted to keep your lip balm in a tub instead and use your finger to apply, you may want less wax.
If you want to make a DIY cocoa butter lip balm recipe without beeswax, you can switch to another wax like candelilla wax which is vegan.

Geranium Essential Oil

I like to use geranium essential oil in this lip balm recipe, particularly for its scent and its benefits . Geranium oil has a heap of awesome qualities like being a natural deodorant, astringent, antiseptic, it is fungicidal and more.
It is a good choice in lip balms as it is soothing and calming and is helpful for dry and/or chapped lips. The scent of geranium oil in this recipe is amazing. It makes the lip balm smell just like Turkish delight! It is sweet and herbaceous.
Geranium oil does have the potential to irritate sensitive skin so be sure to do a patch test first if you are concerned.
You do not want much essential oil in lip balm as it’s not recommended to consume it. At most, stick to 0.5% of the recipe being essential oil. This means in the recipe below, no more than 0.125 grams.

Pink Mica

Mica is a natural product made from ground stone. The bright colours in these powders, however, are often dyed and often these dyes contain chemical ingredients – like the ones we are trying to avoid.
I have mixed feelings about using these coloured dyes in mica powder. You can find all natural coloured mica powders for sale. Such as blush pink mica made from the mineral muscovite.
If you would like, you can choose to leave this ingredient out.

How To Make Lip Balm With Cocoa Butter
It’s easy to make this cocoa butter and beeswax lip balm. I recommend you start by getting all your ingredients out and weighing them. You also should get the lip balm tubes open and ready to go as this lip balm starts setting quick!
Then you basically just need to melt your ingredients on a double boiler or a similar set up where you heat the ingredients over water so the cocoa butter and wax can melt. This is my double boiler set up. You can buy it on eBay here.
It’s best to add the essential oil after the mixture has cooled a little but hasn’t started to solidify.
You then need to be very quick to add it to the tubes, and this can take some practice. If it sets too quickly, you can gently melt it again. I recommend using a dropper or syringe to get it in the tubes.

It’s also a good idea to not quite fill up the tube, wait a minute and then add a little more to the top. This stops there being a hole at the centre which can occur if you pour it all in in one go. You’ll see what I mean when you get to this point 🙂

Below, there are two recipes. You can take your pick. The turkish delight one smells great and is more fun. It’s amazing how much it seems like turkish delight with even the texture feeling similar on my lips.
However, you’ll also get great benefits from the all natural chocolate lip balm recipe. Have some fun and make both!

Chocolate Cocoa Butter Lip Balm Recipe
This homemade cocoa butter lip balm is so easy to make and tastes and smells like chocolate with absolutely no nasties.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons of Cocoa Butter
- 2 teaspoons of Beeswax
- 2 teaspoons of Coconut Oil
- Double Boiler (or you can use a regular pan of water with a heat-safe bowl on top)
- Dropper (or a medicine syringe. I use an old Nurofen one!)
- Lip Balm Containers (I prefer tubes)
Instructions
- Have everything out and ready including all lip balm containers upright with lids off
- Set up your double boiler or pan and heat-safe bowl with water on a low heat
- Add the cocoa butter, beeswax and coconut oil
- Stir gently until everything is melted and well mixed. This usually takes a few minutes
- Turn off the heat and use the dropper/syringe to carefully pour the mixture into your containers. It can set quickly so do it while it’s still hot and liquid. If it does set, you can melt it again
- Let your new lip balms completely cool. I recommend leaving them at least six hours if they are in tubes. You can carefully move them to the fridge to speed this up
