What Is Mango Butter?

Mango butter is made from mango oil which is extracted from mango stones inside mangoes.

Mango butter is packed with nutrients from essential fatty acids (linoleic, oleic and stearic acids) and vitamins A, C and E. It contains beta carotene and minerals like calcium, potassium and folate.

These essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals hold skin strengthening properties that have many benefits to offer the skin from reducing the appearance of stretch marks and scarring to softening the skin and protecting the skin against sun damage.

A small study conducted on the efficiency of mango butter for treating cracked heels when compared with lotion produced results totally in favour of mango butter. The study showed mango butter worked better in reducing cracks and scars on the skin, has a better moisturising ability and holds a longer shelf life.

Mango butter holds very similar qualities to other butters like shea butter and cocoa butter. Mango butter is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and holds high antioxidant qualities and an additional antioxidant called mangiferin which neither shea butter or cocoa butter contain.

Mango butter is very lightly scented and the scent is barely noticeable. It is often used because of this reason. Shea butter and cocoa butter have more intense scents than mango butter. Mango butter contains more essential fatty acids than shea and cocoa butter.

Mango butter is anywhere from white to light yellow in colour and is a good choice of butter when looking for a mild scent.

What Are The Benefits Of Mango Butter On Skin?

Mango butter benefits for skin are aplenty. It can be made into a heap of different skin care products from a mango butter face cream recipe to mango butter hand cream recipe, balms, lotions, salves and more.

It has beneficial nutrients from essential fatty acids (stearic, linoleic and oleic acids) and vitamins and minerals that are all very nourishing for your skin.

Mango butter is moisturising and leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth. It contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. These qualities help to fight infection on the skin, reducing inflammation and encourage wound healing.

Mango Butter Vs Shea Butter For Skin

Wondering how shea butter vs mango butter for skin differs? Well, there isn’t actually much that set these two nourishing butters apart.

Shea butter shares a lot of similar qualities to mango butter. Both offer anti-bacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, mango butter contains an additional antioxidant called mangiferin that shea butter does not.

Shea butter has a mild, nutty and woody scent that most people don’t mind. Its scent is not overpowering. Mango butter has a lighter scent still and is a great option when looking for either an unscented body butter or to perfume a recipe as its scent will not overpower others.

Shea butter has an ivory colour and mango butter has a white to light yellow colour.

Both butters have plenty to offer your skin. They lock in hydration which helps to keep the skin soft and supple and moisturised. Mango butter has slightly more essential fatty acids than shea butter.

If you love shea butter and would prefer to use it in this recipe, go for it! You could also try using both by halving the amount for each butter and making a mango and shea body butter recipe.

It is a lighter weight body butter.

Ingredients For The Best Mango Butter Recipe For Skin

One of the best things about this delicious mango butter recipe is that you actually only need mango butter plus one oil that you love for your skin to make it work. You don’t have to use the oils I mention below and can really use any that suit your skin and give you results.

I recommend safflower oil as it is a light oil that isn’t greasy but it’s up to you.

eBay and Amazon Australia are quick and easy places to buy ingredients and all the gear you need. Below, I direct you to the best place to buy each ingredient or you can click here to buy now on Amazon or here for eBay. This is how I buy all of these ingredients.

If you are in the US, Amazon US is the best place to buy everything.

Mango butter is full of essential fatty acids, vitamins A, C and E, minerals and more. It holds antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Thanks to the nutrients found in mango butter, it is great at moisturising the skin and leaving it feeling smooth and soft. The antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties all help to reduce inflammation, encourage wound healing and fight skin infections.

Mango butter has a light aroma and is white yellow in colour. It is a great choice of butter to mix with essential oils as its scent will not overpower others.

If you don’t want to use mango butter, you could switch this to shea butter.

Safflower Oil

Safflower oilPin
Safflower oil

Safflower oil is an awesome ingredient in my mango body butter recipe. It is very light and absorbs quickly into your skin, making it a less greasy option than some other oils. Safflower oil is considered great for the skin as it is chock full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and scores a rating of 0 on the comedogenic scale (meaning it will not clog your pores).

There have been no formal studies to yet prove what benefits safflower oil has for the skin. However the amount of anecdotal evidence is enough to convince me!

Safflower oil is high in vitamin E and the essential fatty acid, oleic acid, making safflower oil a mild protector against UV rays and a fast absorber in the skin. The amounts of SPF found in safflower oil are not enough to protect your skin like sunscreen will. However, it still provides a small amount.

If you would like to try another ingredient, you could try swapping safflower oil for coconut oil as this too would make for a nourishing body butter. However, coconut oil is a lot heavier and a slower absorbing oil than safflower oil and will likely feel greasy on your skin.

Other ingredients you could try which are lighter options than coconut oil include grapeseed oil or rosehip oil.

Arrowroot Powder

If you are looking to reduce the greasy feel of your mango body butter, adding arrowroot powder is a great option. Arrowroot powder is derived from the starch of tropical plants and it does a great job of absorbing the excess oils in your homemade body butter reducing oiliness.

Arrowroot powder contains B vitamins that are known to help the skin absorb ingredients easier. This means it will help your skin to absorb all the nutrients that are found in the other ingredients in your body butter. Arrowroot powder can even help to improve the blood flow to your skin.

However, if arrowroot powder isn’t your thing or you don’t have it on hand, you could try using tapioca flour or cornstarch instead.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is a fantastic oil for the skin and it has to be my personal favourite.

Lavender oil is antiseptic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammtory, fungicidal and more. It is a good choice of essential oil for all skin types. However, it has been known to cause dermatitis in those who have overused it.

This awesome oil has the potential to promote growth of new cells (making it a good choice for aging/mature skin), healing burns, cuts, bites, rashes, scars and it can even soothe dry skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.

Lavender essential oil is said to be a good choice for those with oily or acne prone skin as it can unclog your pores and kill the bacteria on the skin. It is also a great product for smoothing out wrinkles and reducing the look of scars and stretch marks.

Thought I was done? Nope! Other awesome benefits of lavender oil include its ability to ease muscular pains, joint aches and inflammation. It is helpful for reducing anxiety, depression, stress, and is great for aiding relaxation and encouraging sleep.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang essential oil is another great oil for use in skin care and can be used by all skin types. Particularly dry, mature, oily or sensitive skin types and it has a heap of benefits to offer your skin.

This essential oil is an aphrodisiac and an antiseptic and it can even help regulate sebum production on the skin. It is super hydrating and moisturising for your skin and leaves the skin feeling soft.

Ylang ylang essential oil can increase the blood flow to your skin and even lower blood pressure. It’s aroma is uplifting and sensual which is said to reduce insomnia, sadness and stress and a great way to encourage relaxation.

I particularly enjoy using ylang ylang oil because it really helps me feel sleepy and relaxed which makes it perfect for evening use. However, if you are looking for a more energising essential oil, you could try other essential oils.

Essential oils are not mandatory to end up with a great mango butter whipped body butter recipe. However, they do improve it. If you want, you can switch these essential oils to other or decrease the amount. If you don’t plan to use this butter in the evening then I would switch Ylang Ylang to rosemary or mandarin or something that is more invigorating.

You also should not increase the amount of essential oil in this recipe. It’s not recommended to use more than 2% essential oils in your skincare, and this recipe is using the full 2%.

I was pretty surprised at how easy making my own body butter could be and my whipped mango body butter recipe is super easy to make and based around ingredients I enjoy using on my skin.

All you need to do is mix the ingredients together and its done! Simple.

If you want to substitute, remove or add any ingredients from the recipe list below, go for it. You can customise this body butter to suit the needs of your skin. I have provided a number of substitutes above if any of these ingredients do not suit your skin needs.

Once you have made your mango body butter, it should be stored into an airtight container. Place your homemade body butter in a dry and cool place and keep any moisture away from body butter.

Glass jars that seal make a great way to store your body butter and particularly if you want to gift them. Otherwise any sealed container you have is fine.

I like using bail jars like the ones you can find on eBay here.

If you are in the US, you can buy bail jars here.

Sweet Dreams Mango Butter Body Butter Recipe

Yield: 100g
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes

This whipped mango body butter recipe is great for leaving your skin healthy and soft. It's also great for helping you wind down of an evening. The essential oils in this recipe will help relieve stress and make you sleepy! Use after a bath or shower in the evening for the perfect experience.

Instructions

  1. Soften the mango butter with 15 seconds in the microwave
  2. Place the mango butter and safflower oil in a bowl
  3. Mix with an electric mixer until it's the desired consistency. This is usually a couple of minutes
  4. Add the arrowroot powder and continue to mix for an additional minute
  5. Stir in the essential oils
  6. Place in an airtight jar or container

Notes

Be careful just to soften the mango butter a little and not melt at all. If it's too soft, you won't be able to get a light, airy consistency in the body butter when you whip it. If you do soften it too much, you can put it in the fridge to firm a little.

This will last about 6 months depending on your ingredients. It can become super smooth in hot weather and less smooth in cool weather. I recommend leaving out the ylang ylang essential oil if you wish to use the body butter in the mornings as it can make you sleepy!

How To Use Your Mango Body Butter

To use your mango body butter simply scoop some up and rub it between your hands. Apply directly onto the skin in circular motions. Enjoy the benefits.

  1. I usually use shea butter in my body butter, but I tried mango butter after reading this. I loved it! I think it makes my skin feel softer than shea even. Are there any other butters I should try? I love experimenting with this stuff!

    1. Yes, I recommend you also give cocoa butter a try. I find this a little harder so using a little less and a little more oil in the recipe can help work that out. Cocoa butter is nice and soothing.

    1. It can. To be honest, I don’t even notice anymore as I am so used to using butters on my skin. Adding arrowroot powder (like in this recipe) helps though.

  2. My first diy skincare recipe! I can’t believe how easy it was. I can see how making these products becomes addictive 🙂

  3. I already have cornstarch at home. If I were to substitute that for arrowroot powder, is the measurement still the same? I am looking forward to making this, as I just got my mango butter delivered. Thank you!
