Love gorgeous, all natural lip balms that are fantastic for your lips but looking for some colour? Me too! That’s why I started making my own all natural tinted lip balm.
If you suffer from dry lips or want your lips to be ultra soft, you’ll absolutely love my natural tinted lip balm recipe. My lips absolutely love it, and I have a lot of fun experimenting with different tints and trying to make ones that match my favourite outfits.
I try to avoid store-bought tinted lip balms because they are full of chemicals, and for an area that’s right next to my mouth, I want only the best. That’s why I started making my own lip balms.
Below, I walk you through step-by-step exactly how to make a tinted lip balm so you can make your own awesome collection of best tinted lip balms. I also go through the basics like what is a tinted lip balm and what the benefits (and possible drawbacks) are of all the ingredients I use in this tinted lip balm DIY.
Note that if you are looking for the best vegan tinted lip balm, this is also described below. You just have to make one small change to the recipe which I will walk you through.
Let’s start!
What Is Tinted Lip Balm?
PinThe tinted lip balm meaning is simple – it’s basically a lip balm which also will place some colour on your lips.
Now a DIY natural tinted lip balm like we are making here isn’t going to have thick colour that lasts all day like a heavy duty (and chemical filled) lipstick, but it will colour your lips, look and feel great and be easy to apply.
Why Make A DIY Tinted Lip Balm?
PinThere are many reasons why you may want to make your own tinted lip balm. Here are some of mine.
Natural And Chemical Free
It’s important to me to not use chemicals on my body, and this is doubly so when it comes to my mouth.
When I make lip balm myself, I can ensure I make the best natural tinted lip balm possible as I know exactly what I am placing in it and can ensure it’s only full of goodies.
This is also true if you want to make the best organic tinted lip balm or cruelty free tinted lip balm. Because you are sourcing all the ingredients, you can make it exactly how you want.
Moisturising
Again, because you are choosing exactly what is in your fresh tinted lip balm, you can make it super moisturising and oh so good.
If dry lips are a problem for you, like they are for me, this is such a win. You’re making your lips healthier as you make them the perfect colour 🙂
Quick And Simple
It’s surprisingly quick and simple to make your hydrating tinted lip balm. The trickiest part can be sourcing ingredients but even that is straightforward and you can buy them online (see my links below).
Then you simply weigh the ingredients, melt and mix. Done!
Fun
It can be surprisingly fun to make top tinted lip balm. It’s fun to experiment with the colours, and I enjoy trying to get the colour just right so it is like my favourite dresses.
I also make them with my daughter and for her friends. I love how much pride she has in them especially as she gets older, and her friends really appreciate natural products.
Cost Effective
It is very cost effective to make your own tinted moisturizing lip balm. A little lip balm goes a long way and it doesn’t take many ingredients to make.
It’s so much cheaper than buying a whole lot of lipsticks.
Ingredients For The Best Homemade Tinted Lip Balm
PinOne of the best things about this easy tinted lip balm natural recipe is that you don’t need many ingredients, and you don’t need much of anything.
You can also switch around the ingredients I mention to others, if you wish, that you already have around or prefer for your lips. I give you some suggestions below.
eBay and Amazon Australia are quick and easy places to buy ingredients and all the gear you need. Below, I direct you to the best place to buy each ingredient or you can click here to buy now on Amazon or here for eBay. This is how I buy all of these ingredients.
Beeswax
PinBeeswax is a great ingredient for lip balms. Firstly, because it keeps the lip balm solid and easy to apply, but also because beeswax has its own benefits for your lips.
Beeswax is a natural exfoliant, a humectant and an emollient. It helps coat your lips when you use your lip balm which helps the lip balm last and also protects them.
Beeswax also attracts moisture to your lips. All in all, it’s a handy ingredient to have in your lip balm.
You can vary the amount of beeswax if you’d like your lip balm firmer or softer. For firmer, simply add a little more. For softer, add a little less, although be careful about making it too soft or it may not work in your lip balm tube.
While the recipe below is for a beeswax tinted lip balm, it’s very easy to make this a DIY tinted lip balm without beeswax. You simply switch beeswax to another wax like candelilla wax. Candelilla wax is vegan so this is what I recommend if you want a vegan lip balm. You can buy it here.

Cocoa Butter
PinCocoa butter is my absolute favourite ingredient to have in good tinted lip balms. It is full of essential fatty acids like oleic acid, vitamins E and K and antioxidants, all of which are beneficial for healthy, moisturised lips.
I also love the chocolate aroma it gives the lip balm. This is a great natural way to add a beautiful smell to your end product.
It’s also a natural emollient that provides a barrier on the lips helping to keep the surface of the lips moisturised and the skin beneath hydrated.
It feels really soothing and makes my lip soft. Plus, it has anti-inflammatory properties that could help swollen lips and rashes.
Make sure you buy unrefined cocoa butter as this has the most benefits. You can also switch cocoa butter with shea butter, but I personally prefer using cocoa butter so try this if you can.

Almond Oil
PinAlmond oil is one of my favourite oils and I love using it all over my skin and lips. It’s even better when combined in this best tinted lip balm for dry lips though!
Almond oil has emollient qualities that help your lips to retain moisture. It’s also a very soothing and nourishing ingredient that can help soften your lips and sooth cracked or dry lips. It also offers a limited amount of sun protection (around SPF5).
It has high amounts of vitamin E, known for its healing properties, antioxidants and a range of other great proteins and minerals.
If you are allergic to nuts, coconut oil would be a good alternative for you.

Castor Oil
PinCastor oil is another carrier oil that is very useful and beneficial in a great tinted lip balm in Australia.
It is rich in fatty acids and also ricinoleic acid which is what makes castor oil a unique oil.
It’s useful in tinted lip balms because it gives a shiny, thick, protective layer that can help make your lips look shiny and lock in the colour for longer.
In case that’s not enough, castor oil has antiviral and antimicrobial properties and can help smooth and soften your lips.
However, castor oil is thick and should only be used when mixed with other oils. I don’t recommend changing the amount of castor oil in this recipe.
You could also leave it out, but it does help make this tinted lip balm look more amazing on the lips.

Mica Powder
PinMica is a naturally occurring mineral that has been purified. It is then ground into a fine powder that’s a popular ingredient in cosmetics. Mica is great at adding colour and glitter.
However, the bright colours are often dyes which can contain chemical ingredients so be aware that this is a risk. Some are naturally coloured, but usually the more muted tones.
Don’t use any mica powders for this lip balm recipe that aren’t “cosmetic grade”. This should be labelled clearly.
There is a huge range of colours and this is when you get to experiment. In the tinted lip balms pictured in this article, I used a pink mica, a coral mica and a crystal wine coloured mica. One is a mixture of pink and coral which I particularly liked.
Being able to pick the colour is also great if you are looking for the best tinted lip balm for dark lips or skin. Simply pick colours that suit you.
So whether you want an orange tinted lip balm, a coral tinted lip balm or the best red tinted lip balm, you can make these by buying the appropriately coloured mica powder.
This recipe also works well if you are looking for a tinted lip balm for men since you can completely control what colour to use and how strong to make it.

Lip Balm Tubes
PinIn addition to the ingredients you need for your lip balm, you’ll also need a container to store and apply your lip balm from.
The best containers to use are those purposefully made for your tinted lip balm.
If you already have some empty lip balm containers, you can clean them out and reuse them. Just make sure you remove everything inside them and fully clean and dry first.
Otherwise, these are easy and cheap to buy. You can then clean them out once you use them and re-use. Buying new ones is also a great idea if you want to give your lip balm away as gifts.

How To Make Tinted Lip Balm
PinI can’t over emphasise how easy it is to make your own lip balm.
Start by getting all ingredients out and weigh them set to go. I also recommend you have all your lip tube containers out and open as the trickiest part is getting the mixture in these before it sets so get ready to move quickly.
You then simply melt the ingredients and mix together as per the recipe below.
I recommend you use a double boiler set up as you can see in the photos above and below.
You can buy a double boiler on eBay here.
PinThe last step is to add the mica and mix that in well. It’s so pretty!
Finally, the toughest part (but really not tough) is to use a dropper or medical syringe to get the lip balm mixture into the tubes. You do need to move fast because it sets quickly.
I also recommend you save a little of the mixture to place in the top after it sets a little as it usually starts setting with a small hole round the centre.
Then let it set. I recommend leaving it for six hours so it’s all completely set. You can move it to the refrigerator to speed this up. If you use it too soon after placing it in the tube containers, I find they can break within the container and not work as well.
How Can I Make A DIY Vegan Tinted Lip Balm?
The recipe below is not vegan, but it is very easy to change to a vegan lip balm.
As instructed in the beeswax section above, you can substitute beeswax for candelilla wax and then it will be vegan.
Tinted Lip Balm Recipe
Ingredients
- 10 grams of Beeswax
- 10 grams of Cocoa Butter
- 5 grams of Almond Oil
- 5 grams of Castor Oil
- 1/2 teaspoon of Cosmetic Grade Mica Powder
- Double Boiler (or you can use a regular pan of water with a heat-safe bowl on top)
- Dropper (or a medicine syringe. I use an old Nurofen one!)
- Lip Balm Containers (I prefer tubes)
Instructions
- Have everything out and ready including all lip balm containers upright with lids off
- Set up your double boiler or pan and heat-safe bowl with water on a low heat
- Add the beeswax and stir until melted
- Add the cocoa butter and stir until melted
- Remove from heat
- Add almond oil and castor oil and stir gently until everything is well mixed
- Mix in the mica powder, a little at a time, to prevent clumping
- Use the dropper/syringe to carefully pour the mixture into your containers. It can set quickly so do it while it’s still hot and liquid. If it does set, you can melt it again
- The lip balm may form little holes in the top when it first starts to set. Top up with a little more of the mixture
- Let your new lip balms completely cool. I recommend leaving them at least six hours if they are in tubes
How To Use The Best Tinted Lip Balm
It’s very easy to use this tinted lip balm. Simply roll up the tube and apply to your lips.
You can re-apply as needed. It’ll feel great!
